In this recent article from The Washington Post, some of theimportant skills that summer camp teaches kids are outlined. Author Michael Thompson says, “When you face challenges away from your parents, you know the victory belongs to you alone. If you are, in fact, homesick and you overcome it — which the vast majority of children do — it means that YOU beat it. It was painful, and you beat it. If you were uncomfortable on a canoe trip, a trail ride, a long hike, you know that you got through it: You either sucked it up on your own or got comfort from your friends or counselors, but it’s your achievement.” As the 2012 summer camp season kicks off, these points are a good reminder for parents.
