Fun and Philanthropy at Maine Camps
May 23, 2017
A summer spent at camp in Maine is more than just fun. Maine Camp Experience (MCE) Camps have a longstanding commitment to engaging campers in social action initiatives. Through meaningful programs, campers learn the importance of giving back and helping others. This summer, several MCE Camps are participating in World of Change, a new nonprofit dedicated to harnessing the power of change. Matt Hoidal, founder of World of Change, is glad to have MCE Camps onboard and shares, “There is $10 Billion in change sitting idle in households across America that can be converted into social change for children and families. By collecting change, we can partner with established non-profits and programs to provide life-changing support in the areas of housing, food security, childhood literacy, children’s play, financial literacy, and health.” Campers will bring change to camp with them to learn about World of Change and make their contributions. Families interested in bringing this to their hometown or school can learn more here about World of Change. Maine camps have a long history of social responsibility. Campers have worked with a variety of causes including supporting food pantries, assisting the elderly and children, helping with animals, and many others. Here is more information including a list of Maine-based and national social action partners and initiatives our Maine campers have pursued. Two organizations that continue to be very meaningful to our MCE camp community include Camp Sunshine and Maxcure Foundation. Camp Sunshine, an MCE member camp, is a retreat for children with life threatening illnesses and their families. Maxcure Foundation helps fight pediatric cancer with programs like Dunk Your Kicks, which collects gently used sneakers and recycles them as affordable footwear in developing nations to raise money for families battling pediatric cancer. Experiences assisting others enrich Maine campers’ lives too and help them develop into the mature, global citizens of the future. — Maine Camp Experience Resources & Tools
