The Countdown is On: Camp in Maine is 100 Days Away!
March 13, 2018
We’re almost there – camp in Maine is only 100 days away! We have all marked our calendars, and circled the day when we will finally return to the beautiful summer days in Maine. And, as winter starts to fade (and then returns, and then starts to fade again), we know that our summer paradise is even closer than ever. But with 100 days left before camp begins, both camps & families have plenty of work to do to prepare for the upcoming summer – and since June and July will be here before we know it, it’s time to buckle down and make sure that we’re prepared for another wonderful summer. As spring is on its way, camps are taking the necessary steps to ensure that everything is ready for opening day. Some camps may use the offseason to complete construction projects – this may mean building new facilities, or refurbishing or adding on to already existing ones. On top of this, camps will soon start the process of manicuring their campuses – this may include trimming tree branches and hedges, planting new grass where needed, preparing sports fields, readying the lakefronts, or doing whatever else needs to be done to make sure camp is in tip-top shape when arrival day finally rolls around. And of course, camps are working their hardest to make sure they hire responsible, enthusiastic camp staff to care for and support your camper this summer. For prospective camp families who may be more than 100 days away from a summer at camp, this is a great time to book tours for the upcoming summer. Seeing camp in action can be tremendously helpful when it comes to make your camp decision. And even if your child isn’t ready yet, summer 2019 is still a year and a half away, and there’s a lot of growing to be done between now and then! Tours and Rookie Days and Overnights are great ways to sample camp. Talk to our Campcierge about which camps would be best for your child and how best to schedule the visits. For current camp families, this is the time to start preparing for your child’s summer away. From a logistical standpoint, annual physicals will need to be scheduled and forms will need to be completed. For new camp families in particular, it’s important to pay very close attention to the camper profile form – this will be hugely helpful for your child’s counselors and camp directors, as they work to ensure that they are providing the individualized support your child needs over the summer. It’s also never too early to do your camp shopping. This usually includes purchasing camp gear at your camp’s outfitter such as Amerasport or The Camp Spot and visiting other favorite stores and sites like Modell’s - it always pays to plan ahead! (And remember, you can never have enough clean socks at camp and put name tags on everything.) And, if your camp works with Camp Trucking, as many MCE camps do, don’t forget to schedule your trunk pick-ups. Before we know it, we’ll all be making the wonderful journey back to Maine. As we move into spring and towards summer, make sure you’re taking the steps needed to prepare for a successful summer – because you know that the camps will be!
