Fire up the barbecues and break out the bathing suits – Memorial Day is almost here! Memorial Day is one of my favorite holidays each year – for one, each year I return to New England (my absolute favorite part of the country) for a long weekend spent taking in all of the natural beauty and charm the region has to offer.  From great, locally sourced foods and other delicious treats, to beautiful mountains for hiking and lakes for swimming, there’s nothing quite like New England’s charm to really make the most of this holiday. I’ve already dived into my under-the-bed storage to extract my swim suits and hiking shoes, so that I can make the most of this wonderful weekend! And I know that I am not alone. All across the country families will be enjoying timeless traditions – from hamburgers and hot dogs on the grill, playing outside, visits to a local swimming hole (or a local club pool), and even Memorial Day parades. Memorial Day is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the American heroes who have given their lives in the line of duty, and it is also emblematic of the great familial and community bonds we share, the traditions that tie us together, and the great freedom we have to simply enjoy ourselves and relax on this wonderful holiday weekend. But perhaps the real reason I love Memorial Day so much is that it means camp is just around the corner! Memorial Day marks the unofficial start to summer – the weather is warmer, the sun shines brighter, and all in all it just feels like summertime. And although one weekend isn’t quite enough to satiate my summer longing, I know that pretty soon I’ll be making the drive up to Maine once more for another summer spent in Vacationland!  And I know that when I arrive, the weather will be that much warmer, the sunshine that much brighter, and the inescapable energy of summer will be buzzing throughout the great state of Maine. So what are your plans for this holiday weekend? Whatever they are, we hope you can celebrate with those who mean the most to you, and remember the fact that all that we enjoy this weekend is a testament to those who have fought to make our freedom a possibility. And with the end of school almost upon us, and a summer spent at camp just over the horizon, we hope you have a happy, healthy holiday weekend – before long we’ll be seeing you in Maine! — Maine Camp Experience Resources & Tools
