It’s Go-Time – Opening Day at Maine Camps Is Here!
June 25, 2019
For me, the wait is finally over – this past weekend, we welcomed campers back for another summer in beautiful Maine and Summer 2019 is officially underway! All across the state, camps either have already opened or will be opening in the coming days, and the promise of another incredible summer midst the pines and lakes of Maine at Maine Camp Experience Camps has us all buzzing filled with excitement. There really is nothing quite like the energy of opening day. Kids are literally overcome with joy as they are reunited after their months apart. New campers are introduced to camp life in earnest and get to finally begin the experience they’ve heard so much about, while returning campers are thrilled to find out who will be in their bunks and which counselors have returned for another year, while – and this excitement of being back together is only heightened by the newfound privileges and perks of being a year older. Campers are met with hugs, high fives and fist bumps by directors and staff as they arrive – often by bus. Many come through a welcome tunnel of counselors with hands and spirits lifted up high. Of course, there are many logistics to take care of on Opening Day, including getting campers settled in their cabins and lice checks at the health center (thanks LTC!). We play high-energy icebreaker games to help campers get to know each other or reacclimate (and to make sure they expend plenty of energy and so are hopefully able to sleep soundly the first night of camp, when feelings of missing home can arise). Campers really do inject the life into camp, and it’s amazing how it really starts to feel like summer once the buses roll in. No matter how much preparation you do in advance of their arrival, there’s just nothing that can simulate what it’s like to have real kids with their unique personalities filling the dining halls, bunks, and all other corners of camp. And as I sit on a beautiful, sunny Maine day seeing the lakes and lawns filled with the buzz of activity, I can only smile with excitement for the wonderful summer to come! — Maine Camp Experience Resources & Tools
