This week, we at Maine Camp Experience (MCE) want to highlight the amazing directors of our Maine Camps who really do it all. When we think of camp directors, we often think of their obvious and extremely important responsibilities: keeping our kids safe, planning incredible daily programming, organizing special events and trips, retaining and training top staff, and maintaining high standards for camp grounds and facilities, but the buck (or the moose!) doesn’t stop there! Our awesome MCE directors wear so many different hats each summer at camp, and of course throughout the year, so we thought we’d take a look and see what other roles they’ve perfected as camp directors over the years … all in a day’s work! We asked our MCE directors what their roles at camp include, obvious job descriptions aside. Here are some of their other jobs, to name a few:

  • weather forecaster and reporter
  • morning wake up caller
  • goodnight well-wisher tooth fairy
  • duffle packer
  • cotton-candy spinner at special events
  • toilet plumber
  • lice checker
  • campfire entertainer Our MCE directors have to know the ins and outs of so many different things:
  • understanding the USPS rules and regulations
  • knowing the slang and terminology of counselors from across the globe
  • communicating across time zones
  • finding missing items – including many teeth retainers!
  • putting up tents and stuffing sleeping bags into sacks
  • thinking of alternative ways of doing things – you just never know what the day will bring or how things will work out no matter how well planned out they are! At the end of the day, beyond their many tasks and talents, our directors are friends and role models to campers and counselors alike. MCE Bloggers Emma and Ali remain in touch with their camp directors through email, social media, and more - even years post-camp, and we know they are not alone in seeing directors as friends and role models for life. We at MCE thank our directors for their countless hours of hard work, and fun! — Maine Camp Experience Resources & Tools
