Did you know that July 17th is World Emoji Day?? Fun fact: the calendar emoji (?) is always set to July 17th— reminding us of summertime, year-round! And of course, at Maine Camp Experience (MCE), our favorite emojis are the ones that remind us of camp! For so many in our MCE family, the addition of the lobster emoji ? in 2018 was so exciting — adding to a growing group of emojis that make us think of our favorite Maine food. It may seem silly, but the Maine camp community had been waiting for this addition for years. Some even remember using the crab emoji ? in place of the lobster. But, anyone who loves Maine knows that the crab simply wasn’t the same!Other emojis we love range from the pine tree?, to the canoe?, and the campsite tent?️, we love using emojis to remind ourselves of fun camp memories! We’ve found that each camp also has a unique set of emojis that they use to express the individuality of their camp. MCE blogger Emma says: “I love to use emojis to remember our camp colors, like the brown heart ? and blue heart ?. And mascots, too – I love using the elephant and ? the bear ?. After seven summers of competing in Color War, I feel like these emojis let me keep my lingering team spirit alive!” MCE blogger Ali tells us that she loves to use the emoji sequence “??✋” to remind her of her Maine Camp’s song leading motions. At MCE, we obviously love to disconnect from technology during the summer and escape the constant pull of social media and our phones. But, when we are away from our Maine Camp family, keeping in touch via social media and technology is one of the best ways to keep camp friendships connected and alive in between summers— and even long after campers and counselors finish their last summers! Using emojis can be the perfect way to keep Maine Camp fun going. So, while we celebrate World Emoji Day this week, we ask our Maine Camp Experience family: what are your favorite camp emojis, and favorite ways to keep connected? — Maine Camp Experience Resources & Tools
