Each summer at camp, Maine Camp Experience (MCE) campers learn so many new skills— from waterskiing, to new sports, and new crafts — campers always come home excited about their new expertise. But we at MCE know that campers learn so much more than just tangible skills at camp. When we think of the many ways our campers learn and grow each summer, one thing that immediately comes to mind is the comradery – the closeness, loyalty, and friendship that is fostered each summer. At camp, our campers learn how to be a part of a group and how to come together to work as a team to accomplish something. Whether it’s learning how to work together as a bunk and listen to each other during activities or cabin cleaning, or during Color War activities and competitions, our campers benefit so much from learning to work as a team. And, this spirit and community transfers into their activities throughout the year, outside of camp.Team comradery takes on many different forms at camp each summer. At many MCE camps, our campers participate in intercamps, athletic competitions with nearby camps. At intercamps, campers develop spirit for their camp as a whole. For our older campers, comradery means more than just learning how to work together. In campers’ final summers, they learn many valuable leadership skills. While the specific leadership roles our oldest campers take on varies from camp to camp, the lesson is the same: work together and have fun doing it. Whether it’s leading a Color War team, or even setting a good example for younger campers at meals or activities, our older campers learn how to lead by listening to each other and coming together as a unified group in front of the camp to set the tone for a successful summer. These skills– though unlike the tangible ones our campers learn each summer— are so valuable to our campers in Maine and beyond. No matter what they’re doing, our MCE campers learn so much about being part of a group each summer at camp. Camp is the perfect place to come together, and learn to work as a team, as a leader and a listener. When campers leave each summer, we know they are even more ready to face the year ahead with a newfound spirit and team skills formed through camp comradery! — Maine Camp Experience Resources & Tools
