March Madness: Spotlight on Basketball at Maine Camps
March 9, 2021
Excitement mounts this time each year as we gear up for March Madness! With the great sport of basketball on our minds, we’re spotlighting Basketball at Maine Camps in this week’s Maine Camp Experience blog. We checked in with our Maine Camp directors to learn a bit about bball at their camps. Here’s what they shared: Basketball is one of the favorite activities at our camp. Both boys and girls love it. We play against other camps regularly and we also host a 3-on-3 basketball tournament for three age groups where each camp can bring two teams in each age group to participate. Trophies are handed out to the winning team in each bracket. It’s a round robin tournament and the kids love it. We usually get between 12 and 15 camps to participate. We also do two night games: one for the boys at another camp and one for the girls at our camp under our lights. Basketball activity runs every period all day. We also have a specialty program where serious basketball players can specialize in basketball and get extra basketball periods with a coach to hone their skills for playing on their high school teams. Another MCE camp shared that basketball is very popular. It’s a regularly scheduled activity and an elective. It’s popular among boys and girls, and it’s one of our campers’ favorite intercamps to play. Basketball is popular during the day and under the lights at night – especially during Color War. We have great college athletes who teach basketball to our campers. In addition to regular games, we also play games like Knockout and 3, 2, 1 which are fun warm ups. Another MCE Camp features basketball periods during regular day programming and also includes it during College Days. Campers do a 3-point shoot out and staff have a dunk contest. The counselors get really creative, and the campers love watching and cheering. Also, we’ve done a 3-on-3 mixed age and gender tournament it was really fun and funny. Intercamp basketball games and tournaments are a favorite. Several MCE Camps get into March Madness with virtual tournaments where campers, staff, alumni, and parents can get in on the fun with brackets, and prizes. It’s a fun way to enjoy the games with your camp community. Basketball is really a slam dunk at Maine Camps and we look forward to hitting the courts this summer!
