With Mother’s Day just behind us and Father’s Day on the horizon, we think about parental supervision and caretaking at camp. While Mom and Dad are not with their children at camp, directors at Maine Camps act in loco parentis to ensure the health and well being of kids each summer. They create summers that provide meaningful youth development and lots more! Maine Camp Experience camp directors have decades and decades of experience overseeing every aspect of their camps including, and especially, the campers. Many directors are parents themselves and have raised or are raising their children. Many have backgrounds in education and/or child psychology. All are extremely experienced and adept at understanding and providing what kids need and how to bring out the best in each child. Directors set the tone of the camp. They teach fun and meaningful camp traditions, and they instill camp values including respect, cooperation, integrity, independence, and friendship. Directors are caring. On day one, directors greet campers with a warm welcome as the kids arrive, and they see campers off on the last day when the children head out to return home. Throughout the summer, directors make sure campers are well fed and well cared for. They lend a listening ear, provide good advice, and make campers feel like they’re at home. Directors are good communicators. Oftentimes, directors’ voices are the first campers hear on the loudspeaker at wake-up time. Directors can be seen and heard at morning line-up meetings at the flagpole where they share upcoming events of the day. In the evening, directors and their team tell nighttime stories and share well wishes for a good night sleep.  And, camp directors often lead weekly campfires to discuss core values and key camper accomplishments. Directors make sure facilities are top-notch which means they provide spaces for campers to eat, sleep and play that are safe and where campers will thrive. Directors hire and train incredible staff who are responsible and caring. Staff work round-the-clock to supervise campers, help them learn new skills, stay healthy, and have fun at daily activities and special events. Directors are there to help campers grow. They provide new experiences. They foster friendships. They encourage independence. They encourage campers to try new things, to help others, and to become the best versions of themselves. Directors create a family atmosphere that makes each camper feel connected, and they’re there for special moments like camper birthdays. Maine Camp Directors are caring, smart, dedicated, hard working, responsible, creative, communicative, energetic, lead great teams of staff, and so much more. They follow their training, their intuition, and the guidelines set forth by State of Maine, the CDC, and the American Camp Association to ensure fun, safe summers while the children are away from home.
