Ready for the New School Year! What Kids Bring in from Maine Camp Experiences
August 31, 2021
As the new school year begins, we think about how this past Maine Camp summer has shaped our kids. While they were having fun, they were learning too! Here are a few great things our campers will take with them into the new school year:
- Campers developed their independence and confidence. Away from parents (but with the supervision of directors and counselors), campers became more independent and confident. They had the opportunity to navigate their daily schedules and the camp grounds. They got to choose activities they wanted to do and they learned to advocate for themselves. They also got to set and achieve goals like reaching the top of the rock wall, getting a part in the camp play, or learning to water ski.
- Campers learned about friendship, teamwork, and helping others. There are so many opportunities at Maine Camps to meet different people and learn to work together, which is good prep for life. Campers lived in cabins with peers and handled the morning work wheel responsibilities to keep the cabin clean. They acted as big camp brothers and sisters helping to acclimate younger campers. They collaborated with each other on sports teams and to create songs and music. Campers learned that teamwork makes the dream work!
- Campers learned to try new things. Tubing on the lake may have looked terrifying but turned out to be exhilarating. Making crepes in the cooking studio may have seemed crazy but became cool. Hiking, biking, or fishing may have seemed foreign but became first rate. Eating deviled eggs may have seemed disgusting but became delicious. All of these new, enriching experiences show us that when we try new things, we enjoy life even more.
- Campers enjoyed rejuvenation and revitalization. Safe in their “bubbles,” Maine campers got to go to theater, play tournaments, yell, scream, and cheer, and so much more. Campers got to breathe deeply and appreciate the fresh air around them. They got to “recharge their batteries” (screen-free, of course) before the school routine returns. So, as the school year begins, we wish all our Maine Campers the confidence and joy in new experiences and challenges ahead. And, while we don’t want to rush time, we’ll be counting down the next 10 months till we can be back together at camp again. Maine Camp Experience Resources & Tools
