Peace on earth. Peace be with you. Peace, love, and happiness. Give peace a chance. Go in peace. Protect your peace. With these popular adages, it’s clear that we covet peace. We long for moments away from chaos when we can relax and recharge.

I saw an image on social media that said: “Why do we only rest in peace? Why don’t we live in peace too?” It came through poignantly among disturbing morning headlines related to violence, politics, and scandals. The notion of peace struck me a second time, later in the afternoon, as I was looking through camp pictures and I came upon this wonderful image of a camper relishing peace – reading a book on a warm, sunny summer day by a beautiful Maine Camp lake and I thought ahhhh!

Peace is calm and tranquil. It’s connecting with nature. It’s breathing fresh air in deeply. It’s taking in beautiful sights. It’s freedom from hectic schedules and unwanted commitments. Peace is good for our mental and physical wellbeing. It’s good for our mind and soul.

Peace is about feeling safe and feeling happy. It’s about feeling wanted and being a part of a community, as well as feeling the confidence, independence, and joy in yourself to enjoy a little time alone.

Peace is taking a breather from the chaos of the world. It’s about disconnecting for a bit from electronics and social media and living in the moment. It’s about appreciating where you are, who you’re with, and what you’re doing – even it it’s nothing at all – the peacefulness of a moment of rest and leisure is calmingly powerful.

Don’t get me wrong – camp in Maine is full of buzzing energy, rowdy cheering, and exciting events. It’s fun and action packed. That said, there are many opportunities to enjoy peaceful moments. While sailing on a boat on a crystal clear Maine Camp lake or while sitting on an Adirondack chair beneath the pine trees during rest hour after lunch – these are just a couple examples of time to enjoy quiet moments – time for reflection and introspection. Time to take time out and soak it all in.

As we navigate the next several months ‘til Maine Camp summer 2023, we look forward to the time campers will enjoy priceless peaceful, zen moments in idyllic camp environs. Peace out! :-)
