The Winter Games in Beijing are in full swing and we have Olympics fever as we yearn for our camp Olympics! Many Maine Camps host Olympics (or similar multi-sport and activity events with different names) where the whole camp gets involved. These fun and exciting competitions can range from one day to one week, or even all summer as some camps hold ongoing competition with team events one day each week.

There are many benefits to Olympics at camp:

  • They are fun and full of spirit! Campers love to dress up in their team’s color, and race, run, and cheer for their team. And the events are so much fun – ranging from volleyball and soccer games, to Color Runs, sailing regattas, bucket brigade and more!
  • They add excitement to the traditional, daily camp schedule.
  • They enable campers to meet and spend time with different campers from their cabin, other cabins, and other age groups.
  • They make campers feel like an integral part of their team community.
  • They weave campers into the fabric of the camp’s traditions and history. Years and years of plaques made during Olympics may forever adorn the walls of rec halls and campers sing songs that get written for many generations.
  • Campers learn valuable lessons of teamwork, how to win and lose gracefully, how to come together after Olympics is over, and more.
  • Older campers often learn responsibility and leadership if they lead the camp in teams and events.

As you watch your favorite events at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing (Team USA has more than 220 athletes competing right now), get psyched for Maine Camp Olympics this summer. The thrill of victory awaits!
