No Doldrums at Maine Camps
January 10, 2023
Sometimes in the winter, the days and months can seemingly stretch on endlessly as we feel like we’re waiting for warmer days. This is the exact opposite experience from summer camp in Maine where excitement abounds; kids live in the moment and there are never dull days. Every single day is filled with action, fun, friendship, time for serenity in nature, and opportunities to learn.
Campers feel motivated to get up and out and make the most of each day. Every day at camp is a different day. Campers enjoy several activity periods where they experience land and water sports, arts, nature, and adventure activities. For example, a camper’s schedule could include: waterskiing, soccer, ceramics, ropes course, photography, and gymnastics. Another day could feature: sailing, cooking, golf, radio station, photography, and basketball. Or: swimming, archery, dance, lacrosse, painting, and mountain biking.
Meals, snacks, and a fun evening activity (e.g., sports league, magic or talent show, movie night, neon dance party, or campfire with S’mores) punctuate the day. And, there’s downtime like rest hour after lunch when campers can enjoy some time to relax, and restore. Campers hang with their bunkmates to talk or play cards; they can read or write letters; they can make friendship bracelets, or even just rest.
Then there are special days like all-camp events and trips. All-camp event days are magical! The camp comes together in fun and spirit for events like Olympics. Campers get to know and bond with kids beyond their cabin group and they often like to dress up in team colors and have fun. They cheer each other on at fun events like swim races, painted plaques, and camp songs they create that become summer anthems. The excitement is electric and will live in campers’ minds and memories forever.
Trip days, too, are unforgettable! Maine campers are so lucky to get to take advantage of scenic environs. Younger campers might take a scenic blueberry picking trip and then make blueberry pancakes and muffins when they’re back at camp. As campers get older, they take longer and more adventurous trips. They camp out overnight, and may raft or kayak on the Kennebec River, or take a sunrise hike in Acadia National Park.
Every day, campers of all ages are living life to the fullest. In every moment, they are learning and growing, and may not even realize! Off tech devices, campers are connecting with nature and the world around them. They are bonding with their peers. They are learning new skills and life skills. They are building their character as they take on new life experiences. It’s a time when campers can fully be who they want to be and become their best selves.
While we may count the days ‘til camp, we know once we’re there – we’ll really make them count!
