Close your eyes and think about your favorite place on earth. The place that makes you smile and makes your heart sing. A beautiful place where you see wondrous nature and you breathe fresh air deeply. A place full of happy times with wonderful friends in the great outdoors. A place where you appreciate the natural world and you’re inspired to preserve it. For hundreds of thousands of current and alumni campers and staff, that place is overnight camp in Maine, so we pay tribute to Maine Camps on Earth Day (and every day).

Since the inception of Earth Day in 1970, billions of people across hundreds of countries celebrate Earth Day by appreciating our planet and thinking about ways to preserve our environment.

At Maine Camps, kids gain a real appreciation for their natural surroundings. They spend lots of quality time on big, crystal clear lakes that are great for swimming, sailing, kayaking, canoeing, paddle boarding, and more. There is nothing like jumping into a Maine Camp lake on a warm summer day!

On land, campers enjoy the smell of pine in the air as they play sports, experience the arts, and enjoy outdoor adventures from ropes courses to hikes to camping out overnight.

Being surrounded by this much natural beauty gives campers a sense of calm and well being. It helps their mental, physical, and emotional health. Being out in nature really nourishes mind, body, and soul.

In addition to experiencing nature, campers also help preserve it. Many participate in volunteer experiences like working with local farms, helping park conservation groups, assisting recycling organizations, and participating in lake and ocean clean ups. Maine Camps also look for environmentally conscious ways to run camp like growing fruits and vegetables, getting food from local farms, composting leftover food, and using environmentally friendly plates and utensils.

Spending time at Maine Camps is a great way for campers to enjoy the natural world and to also help take care of planet earth for a better today and a brighter future.
