Camp is Measured in Moments
August 4, 2026
It’s hard to believe we’re already in the second half of the summer.
Every year, it happens. June feels like it’s filled with anticipation. Then, suddenly, August arrives, and everyone is asking the same question: How did camp go by so fast?
Parents often ask us about session lengths. Is three weeks enough? Should we choose four? Seven? The truth is, camp dates are measured in weeks on a calendar.
But that’s not how children experience it.
Camp is measured in moments.
Moments that don’t fit neatly into a schedule or show up on a report card. Moments that seem small at the time but quietly become part of who a child is.
- The first jump off the dock.
- The first letter home.
- The first best friend.
- The first campfire.
- The first hike to the summit.
- The first time they miss home… and realize they can get through it.
- The first time they raise their hand, introduce themselves, perform on stage, lead a cabin discussion, or simply find the confidence to speak up.
These aren’t milestones you can predict.
You can’t schedule them for Tuesday afternoon or guarantee they’ll happen during week two. But they happen.
Sometimes all in one summer. Sometimes just one is enough.
As we scroll through photos and videos from camps across Maine, it’s amazing how much has already happened. Canoe trips have launched. Intercamp tournaments have been played. Camp productions have taken the stage. Campers have learned to waterski, sail, climb, create, laugh, cheer, and encourage one another. They’ve discovered new talents and surprised themselves in ways they never expected.
And somehow, there are still more memories to come.
That’s one of the beautiful things about camp. Time moves quickly, but childhood grows deeply. When summer ends, children rarely remember whether it was day 18 or day 43.
- They remember the people who believed in them.
- The cabin that became home.
- The tradition they couldn’t wait to do again.
- The song everyone sang at the top of their lungs.
- The feeling of accomplishing something they didn’t think they could do.
Those are the things that last.
Those are the things that can’t be measured.
And they’re exactly why summer camp matters.
