How Maine Camps Directed My February Break
February 26, 2019
Co-written by Laurie, the Campcierge™, and her daughter Julia Camp friends make such strong connections that it may be almost impossible to wait a whole school year to see each other again. This was the case when my daughter Julia, a Maine Camp Experience camper, mounted a campaign to visit her camp friends – in Florida! While I was not planning to spend the time or money to make the trip, the endless requests made it hard to say no. And, in fact, I was happy to foster the friendships that mean so much to them (and enjoy some beach time too). When Julia learned that we were going to Florida – she was over the moon. She spent (a lot) of time FaceTiming her friends to plan their visit. They were so excited to be back together. It gave me great joy to see that the benefits of Maine camps extend way beyond the physical confines of the campgrounds and beyond the days of the summer camp calendar. The camp friends had so much fun together in Florida. They loved reminiscing about the years of camp memories. They talked about sailing on their beautiful Maine lake, the electric camp spirit during College Days, and the amazing trips they’ve taken throughout Maine and beyond. During this visit, some of their favorite time was spent singing camp songs, performing camp dances, talking about camp traditions, and planning for the summer ahead. They also FaceTimed their other camp friends so they could all be together virtually. Not only did Julia get to have fun with her camp friends, but I also got to enjoy time with a camp parent. Many families experience the concentric circles that start with the camper friendships and radiate out beyond. Many camp parents and families will enjoy time spent with other camp parents and families in Maine for Visiting Day travels, and in many states beyond, oftentimes surrounding camper get-togethers. There’s something so special about seeing your “summer sisters” and “bunk brothers” during the year and it makes the countdown to camp go by even quicker. From young Maine campers just starting to get to know each other at arts and crafts to teenagers acting silly, having fun, and taking selfies together on the beach in Miami – it’s wonderful to see these friendships grow and life experiences accrue together through the years. — Maine Camp Experience Resources & Tools
