As we enter the month of June and start to get closer to the end of the (virtual) school year, we at Maine Camp Experience are itching to find activities to do at home! Of course, we always know to turn to our Maine camps for creative and fun ideas to keep us busy. At our Maine camps, arts and crafts are always a fan favorite— particularly on a rainy or cloudy day when our favorite outdoor activities aren’t an option.MCE blogger Emma looks back on her favorite camp crafts and remembers the fun of finishing a project: “Whether we were weaving friendship bracelets for each other during free time in the bunk, making lanyards outside before dinner, or finishing impressive craft projects like a ceramic bowl, or a sewn pillow, doing crafts at camp was always one of the best ways to spend our time. By nature, I’m not the craftiest person, but regardless of any artistic talent, arts and crafts at camp was a fun way to be innovative, use your hands and have fun— both inside and outside of the bunk! And, at the end of the summer, packing up my projects and bringing them home with me was a perfect way to carry a favorite camp memory with me throughout the year.”Even recent TikTok trends like tie-dying remind us of our camp crafting projects! Whether it’s tie-dying in Color War team colors, or red, white and blue for the Fourth of July, this outdoor craft activity has been a fun and easy camp “trend” long before the days of TikTok and the internet! We at MCE recommend starting with a piece of clothing you might not care too much about for practice— just in case.Beyond multi-step projects like tie dye, crafts at camp can be as simple as painting rocks or making signs for a friend’s birthday or to cheer on your Color War team. No matter what the craft is, campers love a chance to be creative and to get their hands dirty. We at MCE see no better way to keep kids occupied than to be inspired by our favorite camp crafts and do it at home! Ask your camper about their past projects, and try a DIY craft with them. Like so many camp activities, crafts provide fun outside of technology, and you won’t be disappointed! — Maine Camp Experience Resources & Tools
