Birthdays at Maine Camps

One of the things I miss most about being a camper is having a birthday at camp. The unforgettable feeling of my bunkmates screaming and singing our camp’s happy birthday song the second the clock hit midnight was one of the best feelings ever. I felt like royalty all day with birthday decorations strung around the bunk and a birthday crown on my head. The days were not only exciting for me, but for my bunk as well, as we all celebrated the special occasion with pizza and sweet treats.
Some parents worry that their kids may feel homesick or not celebrated during their birthdays away from home, but in reality, it’s the complete opposite. Camp is a special place that has a way of turning birthdays into magical moments. All Maine Camps do birthdays differently, but no matter where your child is, they will have a great day. If you are unsure how your camper will be celebrated, contact the camp to find out.
At my camp, it went as follows. Walking into the lodge for breakfast, I saw my name in bold letters above the kitchen. The daily schedule, which is placed on all the tables during breakfast, also featured my name. And, with a comforting and exciting smile, the director brought over a birthday hat for the annual picture. Everyone knew it was my birthday, so I was being celebrated no matter what activity I was in. For dinner, my friends and I would go to the Log Cabin for special pizza, ice cream, and cake. And, I got to call my parents and open a special surprise box from them.
Having double the fun is one of the best parts of having a camp birthday. Before going to camp every year, I got to celebrate with my friends and family, and when it was my real birthday, I got to celebrate all day with my camp friends, and still call my parents later that night. I got the best of both worlds every single summer, and if your kid has a summer birthday, they will too.
Being outside, doing your favorite activities, while celebrating your birthday with amazing camp friends … what could be better?! So, what’s the best gift ever? Having a birthday at camp!
