At camp, some of the most unforgettable moments happen when the entire camp comes together—not just as cabins, divisions, or age groups—but as one big family united by friendly competition, shared traditions, and a whole lot of spirit. Whether the camp calls it College Days, Jamboree, League, the Cup, Color War, or Olympics, all-camp competitions are an exciting multi-day tradition at many Maine Camps. These events transcend age and experience, offering every camper and counselor a chance to shine, lead, cheer, and connect.

What Makes All-Camp Competitions So Special?

From the moment of the breakout, there’s an electric buzz in the air. These events are big—not just in scale but in emotion, effort, and energy. They combine the best parts of camp: spirited games, teamwork, friendly rivalry, tradition, and community.

Some key elements include:

  • teams (usually 2 or 4)
  • chants, colors, dress up (tutus, bandanas, face paint, wigs, bows), and mascots
  • challenges, and over-the-top fun
  • matches in land and water sports (basketball, canoeing, swim races, soccer, dance, and more)
  • campy events including Tug of War, Bucket Brigade by the lake, All-Camp Relay that weaves across every inch of camp, Silent Dinner, and the dramatic evening Rope Burn
  • creative elements like best song, best banner/plaque, cake, float, and more
  • strategy, sportsmanship, and consistency across events
  • some camps have all-camp competitions run throughout the summer; others host the event a few days during the last week of the camp summer. Some camps have a couple multi-camp events at different times. Some camps don’t have competitive events like these.
  • some camps have the same colors and team names every year; some change year to year. Some assign forever teams (i.e., “grey for life”), some change campers’ teams each year. Many keep siblings and cousins on the same team.

The True Win: Camp Bonding

While the scoreboard matters in the moment, what lasts far longer are the bonds formed during these competitions. Campers learn to lead, listen, include, and encourage. They face pressure moments with grace, rally through upsets, and celebrate each other’s wins—big or small. And when it’s all over, campers come together again for hugs, campfires, and maybe even a jump in the lake.

The best part?

Whether your team wins or loses, everyone leaves these events with a stronger sense of community. For some, it’s their first chance to be captain. For others, it’s the thrill of singing with their whole team under the stars. And for everyone, it’s a reminder of why camp is so much more than just a summer getaway.

A Tradition That Stays With You

Ask any former camper what they remember most, and chances are they’ll mention their all-camp competitions, their team chant echoing across the lake, or the tears during Sing. These all-camp competitions don’t just mark the calendar—they define the summer. These memorable events are about more than just winning. They’re about heart, tradition, and the magic of coming together as one camp.
